About
Barrett McClean has been a practicing professional photographer since the last millenium. He graduated from Florida State University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science and International Affairs. Being too ethical for politics he decided to follow his passion for photography and signed up for every photography class he could at PJC. Under the tutelage of mentor Warren Thompson, Barrett fine tuned his black and white skills and studied photography for a few years before beginning his career. Initially Barrett took any photography job he could find. His first big break came when The Independent News Weekly hired him as their cover photographer. With Covers being the coveted prize for photographers in journalism, Barrett was hooked. In 2015 Barrett was fortunate to have a photograph grace the May cover of Woman's World Magazine. While showing it to the cashier at the local Winn Dixie the cashier said he was lying. Choosing not to follow the publishing fame and fortune he married his sweetheart Elizabeth Sommerville Holden and had five wonderful children.
Mr. McClean has had the pleasure of being paid to photograph celebrities like Jimmy Buffett, Robin Roberts, Rudy Giuliani, John Glenn and more. At a previous shoot; when getting John Glenn and other astronauts ready for a group picture he noticed Glenn’s flight pin was upside down. After mentioning to him, John Glenn replied, “ Hell son, that’s how I flew half the time anyway.”
Barrett has also enjoyed being the team photographer for The Cincinnati Reds Double A affiliate The Pensacola Blue Wahoos for three winning seasons. He also loves photographing and documenting the local families of Pensacola in the highlights of their lives.
“Coastal Zen”
Photographing the beautiful scenery Pensacola has to offer has always been the true passion of Barrett McClean’s photography. Having surfed these beaches for forty years he has immersed himself in what he likes to call “Coastal Zen.” Enjoying to not only document the beauty but try to portray that feeling of “aah.” when you witness a local sunset, a breaking wave or moonrise. His mantra is the old saying when asked what is your favorite picture? “The next one.”
